The Eriocheir Sinensis more commonly known as hairy crab (大閘蟹) is a famous Shanghai cuisine delicacy. Its prize, the rich and creamy roe. The season for eating the hairy crab starts in Autumn about mid-september and lasts all the way till January. The female crabs are the best in the beginning months of september and october, in the later months the eggs of female crab would have started to mature and harden, that’s when its best to feast on the male crabs.
I’d believe hairy crab is quite an uncommon dish in singapore and its hard to find a restaurant that serves hairy crab. Even harder to find a restaurant that serves good hairy crab. That is why it has never been on the “lets go for it” dishes amongst my friends. Thank goodness I’ve manage to find someone with the same taste buds as me… That’s when i decided to bring Jill to the restaurant which i’ve been having my crabs since i was little. I’d dare say its easily one of the restaurant that serves the best hairy crabs in singapore.
Dad has been coming to Capital Restaurant (首都酒家) for the past 30 over years. The restaurant stands along New Bridge Road. It looks just like a plain ole restaurant in chinatown, but the food.. AMAZING. The quality of the crab they serve has never been compromised over the years. The special blend of ginger vinegar sauce goes absolutely impeccable with the crab. Its slightly tangy yet it goes smoothly down your throat, not snatching the taste of the crab but brings out its sweetness. Just looking at it is tantalizing on your taste buds… YUMS! Drooling just thinking about it!! Another one of my favourite dishes is the crab roe noodles (蟹黄面). I’ve always liked to add some of the vinegar that goes with the crab for this noodles.
The crab season is ending.. I guess if i don’t go again soon, the next time i lay my hands on one would be next year. :( Hairy crab anyone?!
